Russell Westbrook is reportedly a name to watch that could emerge as a late addition for the Miami Heat. But interestingly, the chances of the former NBA superstar landing in South Beach hinge on one strong possibility.
According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, Westbrook is a key candidate to join Miami, unless LeBron James signs and reunites with the franchise.
“According to a league source, Russell Westbrook is a candidate to join the Heat but not if LeBron signs in Miami,” he wrote.

Russell Westbrook currently stands as an unrestricted free agent available in the market. He notably joined the Sacramento Kings in last year’s offseason, inking a one-year, $3.6 million contract.
Playing his 18th NBA campaign, the former league MVP still managed to deliver a productive season. This past 2025-26 outing, Westbrook averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game.
He also shot 42.7% from the field across 64 games.
Westbrook joining the Heat would be an intriguing scenario. Potentially sharing the court with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo might be challenging in terms of spacing and shooting for Miami. Regardless, Westbrook’s energy and tenacity will be key components to what Erik Spoelstra and the Heat can embrace to further satisfy their renowned culture.
Given their previous catastrophic time and partnership in the Los Angeles Lakers, it seems unlikely that both Westbrook and LeBron James would truly entertain a reunion elsewhere, even in Miami.
