OBITUARY
June 16, 1936 – June 19, 2026
Charles Evan Davis (Chick), age 90, of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away peacefully at home, on June 19, 2026. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut on June 16, 1936, to the late Bert and Isabelle Davis. His family moved to Newington, CT where Chick attended Newington High School, where he met the love of his life, Loeta Grace Cowles. They graduated in 1955 and were married in 1958.
In 1962 they moved to Simsbury, CT and raised 4 boys. In 1990, they moved to North Ft. Myers, FL where Chick became an avid golfer. After becoming more interested in boating than golf, they moved to a “gulf access” home located in Cape Coral in 1994.
Besides his family, Chick’s passion was also his career. He began Land Surveying while working for the Connecticut Highway Department from 1955 to 1957, when he enlisted in the US Navy. After the Navy, he joined his brother George’s Survey firm where he worked for several years. Some of the projects he worked on included portions of I-84 and Route 9 during their original construction. Chick and George were Charter Members of the Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors. In 1984 he opened his own Land Surveying firm. With the help of three of his sons, Eric, Scott and Jeff, a Professional Engineer, the firm successfully grew for several years becoming Davis Surveying & Engineering, Inc. in Simsbury. Chick and Loeta later relocated to Florida where he joined his brother George once again. Upon George’s retirement in 1992, Chick bought the firm which is still operating today as Davis Surveying, Inc. in Cape Coral, Florida. Chick continued to work in the office until the age of 89.
Chick served as Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 76 in Simsbury, CT from 1969 to 1975 where he influenced hundreds of young men. He led monthly campouts for the troop every year from September to June and for several years used a week or more of vacation time to attend Scout camp. He also planned and participated in wilderness adventures, including multi-day canoe trips. For many years he spent several weekends setting up the courses for the winter Klondike Derby, which was an orienteering and wilderness skills competition for the local council troops every February. He built several sledges for use in the Derbies, one of which the troop still has. He also laid out the camping areas on Rentschler Field, in East Hartford, CT (when it was still Pratt and Whitney’s airfield) for the 1976 Bicentennial Encampment. In 1976, Chick was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, which is the highest-level distinguished service award given at the council level to registered adult scouters.
Chick was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Isabelle, and his two brothers Newton and George.
Chick is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Loeta Davis, four sons and daughters in law, Dean Davis and his wife Janet of Barkhamsted, CT; Jeffrey Davis and his wife Janet of Suffield, CT; Scott Davis and his wife Celine of Cape Coral, FL; and Eric Davis and his wife Bonnie of Cape Coral, FL; nine grandchildren; Aaron Cecil, Ryan Davis, William Davis, Amanda Davis, Andrew Davis, Courtney Reed, Adam Davis, Rachel Davis and Megan Reed, and five great-grandchildren; Greg, Weston, Clayton, Brooklyn and Kennedy.
