In a strategic move to secure critical repeat business among South Florida’s regional travelers, Brightline has officially brought back its multi-ride pass connecting West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

The initiative specifically aims to retain frequent travelers, daily commuters, and business professionals who regularly move between two of the region’s largest and fastest-growing cities. It should be noted this remains an expensive option when compared to Tri-Rail which we will discuss below.

Flexible Pricing for Frequent Riders

To cater to varying hybrid work schedules and commuting frequencies, Brightline is offering three distinct tiers for its SMART service. These packages drastically lower the cost per trip, making premium rail travel much more competitive with driving.

According to Brightline, the 40-ride tier effectively drops the cost of a one-way trip between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale to just under $9. The newly reinstated passes are available for purchase immediately on GoBrightline.com and via the Brightline mobile app.

Fueling South Florida’s Economic Boom

The Miami-based inter-city rail line, which also connects South Florida to Orlando, cited rapid economic development in both Broward and Palm Beach counties as the primary catalyst for reviving the pass. The region has seen a massive influx of corporate headquarters, financial services firms, technology companies, and out-of-state talent.

Palm Beach County alone has welcomed over 140 company relocations and expansions in recent years, generating more than 13,000 jobs and topping $1 billion in capital investment.

Commuters boarding in West Palm Beach may also notice a bit of historical flair; the railroad is currently running its “Freedom Express” train, featuring a specialized wrap of iconic images from U.S. history to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Tri-Rail: The Publicly Subsidized Commuter Alternative

While Brightline’s rapid rail service along the Florida East Coast Railway corridor heavily targets high-earning corporate professionals, South Florida commuters have other cost-effective transit options.

For those looking for maximum affordability, Tri-Rail serves as the region’s commuter backbone. Running mostly west of Interstate 95, the publicly subsidized line connects 19 stops from north of West Palm Beach down to Miami International Airport.

While slower than Brightline, Tri-Rail offers highly accessible pricing:

Single Trips: Zoned one-way fares between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale remain in the single digits.

Monthly Pass: An unlimited monthly pass for the entire Tri-Rail system is available for $110.

Regional Pass: For $155, commuters can purchase a regional pass that includes unlimited Tri-Rail rides combined with access to the Miami-Dade County transit system.
