PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Florida gas prices are on the rise again as renewed tensions between the United States and Iran add uncertainty to the global oil market, according to AAA.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.82 on Sunday, AAA reported. That is 5 cents higher than a week ago, 8 cents lower than a month ago and 86 cents higher than this time last year.

AAA said prices declined early last week before climbing 13 cents per gallon. The increase comes as crude oil prices moved higher in overnight trading following escalating tensions over the weekend and concerns about the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global oil supplies.

In early trading, the U.S. price for crude oil had climbed nearly $2.50 per barrel, about a 3% increase from Friday’s closing price of $71.41 per barrel, according to AAA.

“Concerns about potential fuel supply disruptions have nudged oil prices higher,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “With tensions in the Middle East adding uncertainty to the global oil market, gas prices could remain volatile in the coming weeks.”

Drivers in Palm Beach County are seeing some of the highest prices in the state. AAA listed West Palm Beach–Boca Raton as Florida’s most expensive metro market, with an average of $3.98 per gallon.

Naples followed at $3.91, while Fort Lauderdale averaged $3.88.

The least expensive markets were in the Panhandle, led by Pensacola at $3.57, Panama City at $3.58 and Crestview-Fort Walton Beach at $3.63.

Nationally, the average price for regular unleaded was $3.88 per gallon Sunday, up from $3.80 a week earlier. Florida’s average remained slightly below the national average, but well above the state’s average of $2.96 from one year ago.

AAA recommends drivers conserve fuel by combining errands, avoiding aggressive acceleration and speeding, removing excess weight from vehicles and shopping around for lower prices. The group also notes that some stations charge less for customers who pay with cash.

AAA says its daily fuel price averages are based on surveys of up to 130,000 stations, using credit card transactions and direct feeds in cooperation with the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express.
