A toddler is in critical condition after nearly drowning in a pool behind a home in North Lauderdale on Sunday morning, deputies said.

The report of a possible drowning at a home in the 6600 block of Pebble Beach occurred just before 10:30 a.m., Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carey Codd said in an email Monday afternoon.

Paramedics took the boy to a hospital, where he remains Monday. The Sheriff’s Office did not release his age or other identifying information.

BSO’s investigation is active, Codd said.

North Lauderdale city officials in a statement on Monday afternoon urged families to enroll children in swim lessons. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department offers swim lessons. Families can receive information by calling 954-724-7061 (Option 1) or visiting the North Lauderdale Aquatic Center, the statement said.

Four children have died in drownings in less than a month in South Florida.

On Thursday, a 2-year-old boy drowned in a lake in Plantation, the same day U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and local swim safety advocates hosted a news conference to warn the public about the “public health crisis” after the recent deaths. Four days earlier, a 4-year-old girl drowned, also in a lake in her Plantation neighborhood.

In Boynton Beach, 8-year-old Javonte Rahming was found motionless in a neighbor’s backyard pool on June 22 after he disappeared from his nearby home.

On June 19, a 4-year-old boy drowned in a backyard swimming pool in North Lauderdale. Multiple relatives reported finding him in the pool and removing him from the water, according to 911 calls released Friday.

Water safety tips

Sign children up for swim classes. The Florida Department of Health statewide offers a swimming lesson voucher program for eligible families with children less than a year old and up to 17 years old.
Ensure layers of protection are in place at home pools, including supervision and physical barriers.
Learn CPR. Different age groups require different techniques. Classes are offered in Broward County through several local cities and fire departments, Broward Health, American Red Cross and the American Heart Association. Classes are offered in Palm Beach County through Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, American Red Cross and others.
