KISSIMEE, Fla. (CBS12) — A 4-year-old Georgia boy vacationing in Florida found an unsecured gun inside a vehicle Sunday and shot and killed a 2-year-old relative.

Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon discussed the case during a Monday news conference. He said the shooting happened just before 4 p.m. in the 2600 block of Scrapbook Street in Kissimmee.

The family had traveled from Georgia for vacation and had just arrived at the short-term rental, Blackmon said. The two children are distantly related.

According to the sheriff’s office, the 2-year-old remained inside the vehicle while family members were outside unloading. During that time, the 4-year-old entered the vehicle, found an unsecured, unholstered handgun and fired it.

Family members heard a gunshot from inside the vehicle and found the toddler wounded, deputies said.

The 2-year-old was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office homicide unit and the Florida Department of Children and Families responded to the scene. Investigators said criminal charges remain possible as the investigation continues.
