JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is looking for feedback from the community as it prepares for a vote on changes to its fares and routes.

If approved as part of its proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, JTA would raise the base bus fare from $1.75 to $2. 

JTA said it would be the agency’s first base fare increase in more than seven years, happening just twice since 2012.

When compared to single-ride public transportation fares in other Florida cities, JTA pointed out that Jacksonville charges less. Miami charges $2.25, and Orlando charges $2.00.

“Fare revenues account for about 6 percent of JTA’s budget, one of the lowest among peer agencies in the Southeast. Fares are about 10 percent of operating costs for peer agencies,” JTA wrote in a press release.

However, JTA isn’t just looking to raise the normal single-ride fare. Prices would either stay the same or go up across the board, including for the St. Johns River Ferry and paratransit Connexion services.

If approved, the fare changes would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2027.

There will be another jump in some prices before January 1 hits. A pilot program approved by JTA board members at the end of 2025 temporarily brought the single-ride bus fare down to $1. That will go back up to $1.75 on August 1, according to a chart released by the agency. It also plans to bring back the fare to ride the NAVI.

Certain routes will be altered or eliminated as well. Routes 25, 32 and 82 are up for elimination due to low ridership, according to JTA.

Community members are invited to attend a series of public meetings throughout July on the proposed changes:
