ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The race for Orlando City Council District 3 is set to head to a runoff after no candidate earned more than 50% of the vote.

With voting concluded, Roger Chapin held a narrow lead, earning 34% of the vote, compared to Mira Tanna, who earned 33.8%. They will each progress to a runoff, which will be held December 9

The race consisted of Samuel Chambers, Roger Chapin, Chris Durant, Kimberly Kiss, and Mira Tanna for the seat. All of these candidates were in the running to replace Commissioner Robert Stuart, who is retiring after 20 years.

Chambers is currently a professor at Valencia College and the elected Orange Conservation Supervisor, according to his campaign website. He said he was running to show up for the people of his district.

Chapin describes himself as a lifelong Orlando resident, local businessman, and proven civic leader on his campaign website. He said he joined the race to make sure District 3 has a strong and experienced voice in City Hall, and is striving to get resources such as safer streets, reliable city services, and smart economic development for the district.

Durant was born and raised in Orlando and is a youth sports coach and mentor and former mayor’s representative for the Orange County Citizen Corps Advisory Board. He said he was “running for Orlando City Commissioner because I owe my community everything and Orlando can’t wait to solve the challenges the next generation will inherit,” Durant said on his campaign website.

Kiss is an estate attorney, homeowner and business owner. She said she was running for the seat because she wants Orlando to “be a place where my children can raise a family … with good jobs and homes, safe roads, beautiful natural resources and plenty of parks to enjoy … for generations to come,” according to her campaign website.

Tanna has served as the City of Orlando’s Grants Manager since 2018, coordinating $275M in grants activity, according to her campaign website. She describes herself as being committed to building trust within local government and making sure City Hall works for everyone that is currently residing in District 3.

District three includes neighborhoods such as Baldwin Park, Audubon Park, College Park, and Rosemont.
