WEST PALM BEACH, Fla (CBS12) — As the Trump administration reviews some immigration enforcement tactics following deadly incidents involving federal agents, President Donald Trump says ICE should continue conducting traffic stops, calling them one of the agency’s most effective crime-fighting tools.

His comments came one day after the Department of Homeland Security announced a temporary pause on some traffic-stop operations while recent incidents are reviewed.

Now, a Florida immigration advocacy group is raising concerns after a man died during an ICE operation in St. Augustine.

Authorities say the man ran from immigration agents during an enforcement operation in northeast Florida and was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer.

The death adds to growing scrutiny surrounding immigration enforcement operations nationwide, including recent fatal incidents involving immigration agents in Texas and Maine.

While federal officials say they are reviewing those cases to determine whether proper procedures were followed, the Florida Immigrant Coalition argues the focus should also be on the impact enforcement operations are having on immigrant communities.

“By deputizing local and state police to conduct immigration enforcement, what you’re really doing is weaponizing traffic stops,” said Thomas Kennedy, a spokesperson for the organization.

Kennedy said increased immigration enforcement has left many immigrants in Florida fearful of everyday activities, including driving to work and running routine errands.

“People are scared,” he said.

The concerns come as ICE operations continue to draw attention across South Florida. Last week, federal agents arrested a Lake Worth Beach bakery owner after a standoff inside the business. ICE says the man has an extensive criminal history, while his family maintains he had a valid work permit and was not facing an active immigration case.

Kennedy urged people who encounter immigration authorities not to flee and to seek legal representation before answering questions or signing documents.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition is calling for transparent investigations into the deaths in Florida, Texas and Maine, saying immigrant communities deserve answers and accountability as immigration enforcement ramps up nationwide.
