Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated adaptation of the ancient Greek epic “The Odyssey” hits theaters on Thursday. From the filmmaker behind “Oppenheimer,” “Dunkirk,” the blockbuster starring Matt Damon as Odysseus put tickets on sale a year in advance.

Many of opening-week screenings for “The Odyssey” in Tampa Bay were sold out or nearly sold by Wednesday, but if you haven’t bought yours yet, here’s where to find a suitably epic theater to see this $250 million epic film.

If you want the biggest screen possible…

The largest confirmed movie screen in Tampa Bay is the 70-by-40-foot behemoth at AMC Riverview 14 in Gibsonton. The theater is showing the Odyssey in its GDX (Giant Digital Experience) auditorium in 4K digital with Dolby Atmos sound.

Other giant screens locally include the Grand Screen at B&B Theatres Wesley Chapel – The Grove 16, which according to some is the next largest in Tampa Bay. The IMAX screen at the AMC Sundial 12in St. Petersburg — Tampa Bay’s largest IMAX screen — checks in at 62 by 32 feet. TheAMC Veterans 24 IMAX in Tampa is 54 by 32 feet, and the screen where Sun-Ray Cinemas in Tampashows 70mm film screenings is 48 feet wide and 22 feet tall.

(If it comes to fruition, all of these screens will be dwarfed by a world-record-setting movie screen planned for downtown Clearwater that will measure 131 feet wide and more than 72 feet tall.)

For comparison, a standard film screen is about 35 feet by 14 feet.

If you want the clearest picture possible…

While digital 4K projections (like most IMAX and other large format screenings) are already incredibly clear, those who want the absolute highest resolution possible may want to seek out a screening on actual film.

There will be some 35mm film screenings of “The Odyssey,” but the absolute most vibrant colors and clearest picture come from 70mm film, which itwas shot on. Only two local theaters have 70mm projectors. Sun-Ray Cinema recently installed a 70mm projector and has screened rare 70mm prints of classic films for the past few months. They’ll be showing “The Odyssey” on 70mm for at least two weeks.

“The Odyssey” also has theAMC Veterans 24firing up its 70mm projector for the first time since Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” got some 70mm screenings in 2023.

If you’re willing to drive outside of Tampa Bay for something better…

“The Odyssey” is the first film in history to be completely shot on IMAX 70mm cameras. That feat even required new technology to quiet the massive cameras during quieter dialogue scenes.

If you want a viewing experience that is the closest to exactly what Nolan intended, you’re looking for a 70mm IMAX screening on film. There’s only about a dozen 70mm IMAX theaters in the United States, and the only one in Florida is at the AutoNation IMAX in Fort Lauderdale.

If you’re simply looking for the absolute largest screen showing commercial movies in Florida, the IMAX auditorium at Regal Pointe Orlando on International Drive has a 64-foot high, 84-foot wide screen.

If you just need a convenient screening time…

As of Wednesday, the Tampa Bay theater with the most scheduled showings of “The Odyssey” on Friday is AMC Veterans in Tampa, which has 24 screenings ranging from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and divided among 70mm, IMAX, Dolby and conventional presentations. That was one more than Regal Park Place in Pinellas Park, which had 23 scheduled screenings Friday.
