ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A more than 600-acre prescribed burn has been issued at the Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park in Orange County for Friday, stated officials.

The St. Johns River Water Management District stated it is conducting a 605-acre prescribed fire on the northwestern section of the park, located in the Middle St. Johns River Basin.
“Its purpose is to reduce hazardous fuel loads, improve habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker and maintain fire dependent natural communities,” the district stated in a press release.
It also explained that these prescribed burns also help protect the land and neighborhoods from destructive wildfires by burning off fuel (such as dead timber) that piles up over time.
