STUART – The Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment Center opened its expanded Stuart location, increasing access to clinical research, early detection and educational outreach for people affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was conducted Thursday, July 9, for the new facility at 2392 SE Ocean Blvd., with founder and CEO Dr. David Watson leading the celebration.
“Everyone deserves access to the latest advancements in preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Together we can find a cure,” Watson said in a statement.
Watson founded the organization 14 years ago after Alzheimer’s disease claimed the lives of all four of his grandparents.
“It all starts with love; mix that with a whole lot of effort and dedication and that is what will get us to a cure,” Watson said.
Watson has participated in more than 400 clinical trials for the treatment or prevention of Alzheimer’s disease during the past 26 years
Although there has been a Stuart location since 2020, this expanded facility, which actually opened in May, is designed to better serve the community and those experiencing or having concerns about memory loss, according to Watson.
Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment Center also has locations in Wellington and Columbus, Georgia.
Clinical research coordinators and psychometricians work together in an onsite lab. Psychometricians design, analyze, and validate psychological tests to measure knowledge, skills, abilities and personality traits
Through the work by the research center, Alzheimer’s Disease can be detected about 10-15 years before symptoms start through a simple blood draw, according to Watson.
The work done at the facility is at no cost to the patient or his/her insurance, according to Watson.
An outreach department offers educational presentations and a mobile unit that can visit communities and events to provide access to research close to home.
