It can feel like an impossible riddle figuring out when to ride one of Epic Universe’s most popular attractions!

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is at the top of many people’s must-do list for Epic Universe — and for good reason! It’s an ultra-detailed and immersive attraction with impressive storytelling that starts before you even get to the ride itself. But if experiencing this ride is at the top of your priority list, beware that it’s important to strategize when — and how — you plan to queue differently than you might expect.

There’s no way around it, the line for Battle at the Ministry is often seriously long. We keep track of the wait times of all the rides in Epic Universe — and other Universal and Disney parks — and so far this year, Battle at the Ministry has had an average wait time of 92 minutes. That’s the second highest in the park, after Mine-Cart Madness at 109 minutes.

Of course, that’s just an average, so we’ve regularly seen that number higher, with the wait often reaching two hours or more.

There are a few different strategies that guests might use to try to experience Battle at the Ministry with a shorter wait than the standby line — let’s take a closer look at the options!

There’s a Catch for Most of the “Shorter Line” Options

Battle at the Ministry does have an Express Pass line, which is Universal’s version of a skip-the-line service. Much like Disney’s Lightning Lane service, Express Pass DOESN’T mean that there will be no wait for the ride; it just allows you to skip the standby queue to use the shorter Express Pass line instead.

But wait a second before you decide to just spring for Express Pass to solve the long line dilemma! As is the case with many other Express Pass lines, the Express line for Battle at the Ministry skips part of the queue, including some sections that are important for the ride’s plot. One of the spots you skip is Dolores Umbridge’s office, which is essentially the ride’s pre-show. If you’re a huge Harry Potter fan, you’ll probably want to experience the attraction through the regular line at least once to get the full story, rather than relying only on the Express Pass!

There’s also a single rider line for the attraction, but as is the case with all single rider lines, there’s no guarantee that the wait will be shorter than the standby line. We’ve had single rider experiences where we breezed through pretty quickly, and times where we waited just as long as standby — Team Members pull from the single rider line to fill empty seats left by other parties, so the actual wait time comes down to the luck of the draw based on how things are moving that day!

So, Express Pass can get you a shorter wait, but you’ll miss some of the story. And the Single Rider line might get you a shorter wait, but there’s no guarantee (and you’ll be split from your party). But there is one shorter line strategy that we absolutely recommend!

The HUGE Perk of Early Admission

One of the perks for guests staying at a Universal hotel is Early Admission, which allows them to enjoy select attractions an hour before the park officially opens. Universal recently changed how Early Admission works at Epic Universe, and it made a HUGE difference in the strategy we use for when to head to the queue for Battle at the Ministry!

In the early days of Epic Universe, Battle at the Ministry was NOT open during Early Admission. But since both hotel guests and non-hotel guests could still enter the area, everyone could start queuing for it, even though it wasn’t open yet. That meant the wait times would rack up fast, plus you would have the built-in extra hour or so of waiting in line before the ride even opened. But now Battle at the Ministry IS open for hotel guests during Early Admission, and that’s 100% the first ride we would head to during that early entry period! Keep in mind that the rides included can change at Universal’s discretion, so remember to double-check the list before your trip to confirm.

On the flip side of that, if you DON’T have Early Admission access, we’d hold off on Battle at the Ministry in the morning and start with one of the rides that isn’t open during early entry, like Stardust Racers.

Don’t Wait Too Late to Ride!

Even though it’s rare to ever see a “short” wait for Battle at the Ministry, the line does tend to dip later in the day. With that in mind, for guests who don’t have access to Early Admission, your best bet is probably to head to Battle at the Ministry in the early to mid-afternoon, once the crowds have hopefully started to disperse a bit.

One important caveat, though — the queue for Battle at the Ministry sometimes closes before the park if it hits capacity, so don’t try to wait until the last minute to get in line! If it’s an absolute must-do, we’d plan to head to the queue at least a few hours before park closing to be on the safe side.

To sum it up — if Battle at the Ministry is open during Early Admission during your trip and you have access to the perk, we’d absolutely head to the ride first thing. And for other guests without Early Admission, we’d wait until around mid-afternoon to hop in line to give the crowd a chance to clear out a bit. As is the case with all things theme park, the details are subject to change, so make sure to double-check the details before your trip and plan accordingly!
