ST. LUCIE COUNTY – A 32-year-old Fort Pierce man was arrested July 9 after allegedly leading St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office detectives on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle.
Detectives with the Special Investigations Division spotted a black Honda Civic repeatedly circling the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on Orange Avenue before the driver sped away westbound, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The driver, identified as Savon Damont Montgomery, allegedly weaved through traffic, passed vehicles, and drove into oncoming lanes as detectives pursued him. The vehicle, later confirmed stolen from Port St. Lucie, was briefly lost before being located on Shinn Road and then Okeechobee Road.
Authorities said Montgomery ignored emergency lights and sirens, crossed the grassy median into opposing traffic, and continued fleeing until the Honda left the roadway, blowing a front tire. He then climbed into the back seat in an apparent attempt to avoid arrest before detectives took him into custody without further incident.
A passenger was released after deputies determined they were not involved.
Montgomery was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail on charges of grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding with willful disregard for persons or property, and driving while license suspended as a habitual offender. As of July 10, he remained jailed without bond after a previously posted bond on the license suspension charge was revoked.
“Every decision this suspect made showed a complete disregard for the safety of others,” Sheriff Richard Del Toro said in a Sheriff’s Office Facebook post. “Our detectives remained focused, acted professionally, and brought this dangerous situation to a safe conclusion.”
