PORT ST. LUCIE — Fresh from National Skinny Dip Day on July 11, “The Bare Truth,” a new comedy, opens at Treasure Coast Theatre.

Written by local playwright H.G. Brown, the play tells the story of a retired couple, recently settled in South Florida. Growing weary of their overprotective daughter and son-in-law constantly checking up on their lives, the seniors hatch a plan to get some alone time.

With the help of the friendly couple next door, they convince their kids that they have become nudists. Their ploy works, but not the way they expected.

They learn a few things about their children, grandchildren and neighbors along the way.

Brown, of Port St. Lucie, is a veteran playwright, director and author who has been writing for six decades. Several of his plays have been produced Off-Broadway, including The Bare Truth, which opened in New York.

He’s also the author of a book of poetry called “Attitudes of Flight.”

Treasure Coast Theatre’s staging of “The Bare Truth” will be its fourth run in Florida.

A play with nudists could pose a challenge but Brown said there will be no nudity, and it is a family-friendly production.

Brown teamed up with Heidi Condon, a veteran director on the local scene, to direct the cast of “The Bare Truth.”

Brown stepped back in the last two weeks of rehearsals and Condon and stage manager Jose Torres wrapped things up.

“It was off to a strong start and now they have the reins,” Brown said. “No one wants the playwright around at rehearsals anyway. I can tell ya that for sure.”

He said Condon’s hands-on approach with the actors is very helpful.

Cast members include Ellen Gillette; Jack Krantz; Ellie Nicholas; Joe Moore; Austin Parriott; Brigida Mumford; Katie Dempsey; and Travis Perkins.

“It’s a very good cast,” said Brown. “It’s been a pleasure to work with them.”

“The Bare Truth” runs weekends July 31 through Aug. 16. Performances start at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
