TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Fifty Leon County students are getting a new title this summer: Junior Deputies.
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office has launched its first Sheriff Walt the Safety Star Youth Safety Initiative, welcoming 50 students at the Walker Community Center to become Junior Deputies and official Safety Stars.
The program focused on hands-on learning and safety lessons, including how to call 911, properly wear a helmet, stay safe online, cross the street safely, recognize trusted adults and understand stranger danger.
At the end of the day, each student made the Safety Star Pledge, promising to listen to trusted adults, help others when they can, and use what they learned to help keep themselves, their families and their community safe. The sheriff’s office said the initiative is aimed at empowering children with safety skills that can strengthen the community.
