King fled south from the scene, authorities said. Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Lee County sheriff’s deputies later stopped him on southbound Interstate 75 in Lee County after a pursuit.

Authorities said King barricaded himself inside his vehicle before he was taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. No law enforcement officers were hurt.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the use of control, authorities said.

King remains hospitalized in Lee County and is in the custody of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. St. Petersburg police directed additional questions about his status to the sheriff’s office.

The city said grief counselors will be available to employees.
