TALLAHASSEE Fla. — A vehicle fire that spread to a home prompted a late-night response from the Tallahassee Fire Department on July 23.
At about 10:40 p.m., firefighters were called to a residential structure fire on Mahan Drive after a vehicle caught fire and the flames extended to the house. Crews arrived to find fire extending into the carport, attic, a bedroom and nearby trees.
Firefighters deployed hose lines and brought the fire under control in about 10 minutes, preventing it from spreading further. The homeowner was safely outside when crews arrived, and primary and secondary searches confirmed no one remained inside. No injuries were reported.
The home is not currently livable. The American Red Cross was not requested because the homeowner had alternate accommodations.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a malfunctioning vehicle that the homeowner reported was making unusual noises before it was parked.
Tallahassee firefighters were assisted by Chaires-Capitola Fire & Rescue, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and Leon County EMS. Responding units included E1, E6, E16, T16, BC1, BC3, FM1 and V12.
Fire officials urged residents to have vehicles inspected if they make unusual noises, emit smoke or show signs of a mechanical problem. If a vehicle catches fire, move to a safe location and call 911.
