Calhoun sentenced to death in Mia Brown murder after Florida death penalty law change

  • July 25, 2026

HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -A judge has formally sentenced an Esto man to death for the kidnapping and murder of a Holmes County store clerk.

Johnny Mack Calhoun was convicted of kidnapping and murdering Mia Brown in 2010. He was originally sentenced to death in 2012, but the case returned to court this spring following changes to Florida’s death penalty procedures.

State law now requires at least eight jurors to vote for death before a death recommendation can move forward. After eight days of testimony in April, the jury recommended the death penalty.

A judge agreed Friday, formally sentencing Calhoun to death.
