On Saturday, Inter Miami traveled north and took down CF Montreal in a 1-0 victory. The win marked the team’s sixth straight in MLS play, and the second within three days since MLS action restarted. Making it even more impressive is that Lionel Messi hasn’t rejoined the team yet.
In Messi’s place, Luis Suarez has taken on the role of the team’s main goalscorer. Suarez had finished the first half of the season very strong, notching a hat-trick against Philadelphia Union in the final game before the World Cup break. A brace in the first game back against Chicago Fire was followed by an epic panenka penalty against Montreal, which ended up being the match-winner.

The reason Suarez had a penalty kick to shoot to begin with is the cause of major concern for Miami, though. Suarez’s attacking partner German Berterame had been fouled in the box by a defender who clashed into him from behind. Berterame slammed into the ground in a very hard impact, and players on the field quickly called for the training staff to attend to him.

Berterame was seemingly concussed, and it was a truly concerning injury. An ambulance rushed on to the field, medics secured Beterame onto a stretcher and loaded him into the ambulance. Following his goal, Suarez held up Berterame’s No. 19 jersey as a sign of respect.
According to Inter Miami manager Guillermo Hoyos, Berterame is now conscious and recovering. It’s unclear what his recovery timeline looks like, but it sounds like he avoided major complications.
Miami’s next game will come on Saturday, August 1 against Columbus Crew. It’s unlikely Messi will be back for that game.
