Free JTA rides to cooling centers
The Jacksonville Transportation Authority will provide free transportation to cooling centers on designated activation days. Riders must tell their bus driver they are traveling to a cooling center to receive the free fare.
Tips for staying safe in the heat
Health officials recommend the following precautions during extreme heat:
Stay cool
Minimize outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If time outside is unavoidable, seek shade and take frequent breaks in cooler areas.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made from breathable fabrics such as cotton to help the body stay cool.
Spend time in air-conditioned places — such as malls, libraries or community centers — to escape the heat.
Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Temperatures inside parked cars can rise to dangerously high — and potentially fatal — levels quickly.
Stay hydrated
Drink water throughout the day, even without feeling thirsty. Dehydration can occur rapidly in hot weather.
Limit alcohol and caffeinated beverages, as both can accelerate dehydration. Remind family members and friends to drink water regularly.
