MIAMI (WFOR) – A disabled 70-year-old man living without air conditioning in Florida received help from a stranger to fix it.
Wallace Sapp’s living room is 20 degrees cooler than the day CBS News Miami met him.
It is a gift from a stranger determined to teach an unforgettable lesson.
“People do care. I appreciate you for coming out, putting the story out for me,” Sapp said.
In early July, CBS News Miami found the disabled 70-year-old man suffering without air conditioning in his Town Park Village home in Overtown.
His agreement to live there says the corporation will provide and pay for all necessary repairs, but a dispute over money kept maintenance workers away.
It moved Danny Bivens to call a friend with ties to this community for an introduction.
“An elderly person, as hot as it is right now… I work in the heat every day. If I was able to help, I wanted to,” Bivens said.
CBS News Miami spoke to Bivens on FaceTime in between jobs.
He runs Below Zero Cooling and teaches students how to perform HVAC repairs.
On Friday, Bivens brought a student to learn a lesson at Sapp’s home.
“You know, we just try something because it hasn’t ran since 2024,” Bivens said.
“And ever since it’s been cooling and it’s cooling very slowly, but he’s coming back to see exactly what’s the problem and to want to fix it for me for no charge,” Sapp said.
“We’re going to make sure we get him right,” Bivens said.
“I feel a whole lot better,” Sapp
Two weeks ago, Sapp wondered if anyone cared about his suffering.
Now, he has no doubts.
