One of the suspects in the shooting turned himself in Wednesday. The other was arrested last week, SPPD says.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Childs Park YMCA is now open again following deadly shooting last Wednesday at the facility, but you’ll need an ID or membership card to enter, according to the YMCA’s chief advancement officer. 

On July 22, there was a shooting in a bathroom inside the Childs Park YMCA that resulted in the death of 18-year-old Deondre Wright and the arrest of two people.

Jeremiah Peterson, 18, turned himself into the police Wednesday and My’ Kiese Johnson, 18, was placed under arrest last week, police said. According to jail records, Johnson was charged with murder while engaged in robbery. Peterson was charged with felony murder and jail records indicate he had a felony warrant outside of the county.

Wright died after the shooting, according to public safety officials.

Childs Park YMCA said Wednesday that the shooting was an isolated incident involving two people with no affiliation to the YMCA.

“We are grateful that no YMCA staff, members, program participants, or guests were injured,” said Suzanne Delaney, chief advancement officer of the YMCA of Greater St. Pete.

Delaney says the YMCA is always committed to serving the Childs Park community.

“As our community continues to heal, our thoughts remain with everyone affected by last week’s events,” Delaney said. “We look forward to welcoming our members and neighbors back and continuing our mission of strengthening our community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.”

The YMCA now requires everyone entering the facility to check in using either a valid photo ID or YMCA membership card, Delaney says. For those who might not be able to afford a membership, the YMCA has a financial assistance program that offers scholarships. Delaney says they do not turn anyone away due to an inability to pay.

“The safety and well-being of everyone who visits our Childs Park YMCA remains our highest priority,” Delaney said.
