PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Visitors and residents near Savannas Preserve State Park may see smoke Friday as state crews plan to conduct a prescribed burn across approximately 170 acres.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection said the burn is planned for Friday, July 31, weather permitting. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office also shared the advisory Thursday to alert the community.
The burn will take place in an area of mesic flatwoods north of Walton Road and west of Sandhill Crane Park.
Officials said prescribed fires are conducted only when weather conditions are suitable. Crews will make a final decision after reviewing Friday’s predicted fire weather and obtaining authorization from the Florida Forest Service.
Prescribed burns are used to mimic Florida’s natural fire cycle, restore forests and other natural habitats and clear accumulated undergrowth that could fuel a wildfire.

State officials said burned areas can also experience increases in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
The burn may be postponed if weather conditions are unfavorable.
