FORT PIERCE — A fresh haircut can help students walk into a new school year with a little more confidence.

The Academies of Cosmetology is offering free back-to-school haircuts for school-age children at its three Treasure Coast campuses through Aug. 14.

Families do not need appointments or advance registration. Students and parents may walk in, sign in and wait for the next available barbering or cosmetology student, much as they would at a traditional barbershop or salon.

Kris Evangelista said the schools have long offered discounted back-to-school haircuts, but began offering them for free only within the past few years.

“It’s always been discounts for the kids for back to school, but I believe this is the second or third year we’re doing the free cuts,” Evangelista said.

All students at the three campuses are expected to participate, with instructors supervising the work to ensure children receive quality haircuts. Families may request a specific student stylist if they choose.

Evangelista said the service is especially meaningful because a haircut can make a difference in how children feel when they return to school.

“It’s a fresh year, fresh haircut,” Evangelista said. “It boosts their confidence, their self-esteem.”

The promotion has become popular with families, including regular clients who return each year and bring relatives and friends. Evangelista said the academies do not plan to turn anyone away.

Michael Prevette owns the Academies of Cosmetology, where Evangelista assists. Evangelista said the academies also plan to continue their community outreach beyond the back-to-school season by hosting free spring and fall festivals.

The free back-to-school haircuts are at Beauty and Massage Institute, 1375 U.S. 1, Suite 2, Vero Beach, 772-978-7178; Port St. Lucie Beauty Academy, 10036 South U.S. 1, Port St. Lucie, 772-337-4747; and Fort Pierce Beauty Academy, 3028 South U.S. 1, Fort Pierce, 772-464-4885.
