TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee Animal Services celebrated “Dogust First” Saturday with a free adoption event that helped 20 pets find new homes.
August 1 is known as “Dogust First,” a day that celebrates the official birthday of shelter dogs, many of whom don’t have a known birth date.
The event resulted in 11 dogs and 9 cats being adopted.
Amelia Angleton, a volunteer with Tallahassee Animal Services, said finding homes for the animals is especially important now because the shelter is full.

“It’s so important because as the City of Tallahassee, we take in all the animals in our communities that need homes,” Angleton said.
“So as soon as we open up a kennel, we can take someone else and we can make sure we have enough space for everybody to make sure dogs and cats find their forever homes.”
Families attending the event also had the chance to sign a life-size birthday card for the shelter dogs.
Angleton said she hopes the event will become an annual tradition.
