Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal isn’t going anywhere.
Cristobal and the university have agreed to a contract extension, a source confirmed to the Miami Herald on Monday night.
Exact terms of the extension, including how many extra years were added to Cristobal’s contract, were not given. However, Cristobal is slated to receive a raise that is effective starting this season, according to a source. His original deal was for 10 years and $80 million. The 2026 season is Year 5 of that deal and ran through the 2031 season.
As a private school, the University of Miami does not have to make Cristobal’s contract public.
On3, which first reported the deal, added that Cristobal “plans to make a substantial donation to the University as part of UM’s on-going commitment to athletic excellence.”
The Hurricanes are coming off a 13-3 season and a run to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, where they fell 27-21 to Indiana at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami won seven games against teams who were ranked in the AP top 25 poll at the time of the contest.
UM is expected to be in the national championship conversation again this season. The Hurricanes were voted as the overwhelming favorite to win the Atlantic Coast Conference, something UM has not accomplished yet since joining the league in 2004.
Miami has steadily improved its record every season under Cristobal, from 5-7 in 2022 to 7-6 in 2023 to 10-3 in 2024 to 13-3 last season. UM had just one 10-win campaign in the previous 18 seasons that preceded Cristobal, a span that included five different head coaches.
Cristobal has a 97-79 career record in 14 seasons as a head coach at UM (2022-present), Oregon (2017-2021) and FIU (2007-2012).
The Hurricanes begin fall practice on Tuesday. Their season opener is Sept. 4 at Stanford.
