MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins returned to practice Thursday after an off day Wednesday.
Following a stretch and walkthrough period inside, players and coaches were only out on the briefly when lightning during a special teams period sent the team back inside for drills. Fans had to evacuate once the original lightning horn sounded.
Miami had two practices in full pads Monday and Tuesday. As the Dolphins returned to practice Thursday, most players were out of pads, signaling a lighter day.
Dolphins tight end Greg Dulcich was in a red, no-contact jersey Thursday.
Safety Dante Trader Jr. was not seen practicing, and neither was wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. They were not known to have injuries before Thursday.
Offensive linemen Austin Jackson and Jamaree Salyer were still not practicing after coach Jeff Hafley said they were day to day. The same applied to tight end Ben Sims and newly acquired tight end Jeremiah Franklin.
Rookie wide receiver Chris Bell continues to ramp up his rehab activity with greater intensity to his workouts.
Here are some observations from the Dolphins’ Thursday practice:
— The Dolphins went with a two-minute drill late in practice. They had a fourth-and-1, but LT Patrick Paul committed a false start, his second of the practice. Willis then was pressured by edge Chop Robinson on fourth-and-6, causing him to scramble and LB Tyrel Dodson met him around the line of scrimmage on the sideline.
— On the first play of his late-game situation, QB Quinn Ewers found WR Jalen Tolbert wide open down the right sideline on what had to be a blown coverage by the second-team defense.
— LB Willie Gay Jr. intercepted a pass from QB Cam Miller, where he was dropped back in a zone and tipped the ball up to himself. TE Cole Turner, who caught a short out from Malik Willis earlier, hustled after him on the return and appeared to poke the ball out. Gay later whipped tackle Marques Cox to force a throwaway from QB Quinn Ewers.
— QB Malik Willis scrambled to the left for a gain of about 8 yards in another instance of him using his legs in practice, something happening more and more deeper into camp.
— Willis also made a smart decision to dump one off to RB De’Von Achane as he was pressured by Chop Robinson, who might’ve been held. Achane looked shifty, finding room to run up the middle later.
— WR Malik Washington picked up a lot of YAC in the middle, turning a short reception into a big gain.
— QB Cam Miller found WR Theo Wease Jr. deep over the middle.
— RB Jaylen Wright had a sizeable gain on the ground running to the left side. LB Jacob Rodriguez was there to stop him when he tried the right side the next snap.
— Achane made a nice diving, one-handed grab over the middle, but in the situational setting, it was short of the line to gain on the pass from Willis.
— Undrafted rookie S Louis Moore intercepted a pass from fourth-string QB Mark Gronowski where he may have been sacked or hit before the throw if defenders were hitting the QB. Gronowski later flashed his wheels, scrambling for a big gain, like he did in college at Iowa.
— DT Kenneth Grant did a good job rerouting from his pass rush after Willis quickly got the ball out to WR Theo Wease on one throw short over the middle. He was there, ready for a big pop if Wease escaped the grasp of the cornerback in coverage.
— LB Ronnie Harrison Jr. picked up a practice sack against QB Quinn Ewers as the entire pocket collapsed.
— S Michael Taaffe and CB JuJu Brents combined on coverage on a deep incompletion to Malik Washington from Willis.
— DT Jordan Phillips stuffed an up-the-middle run nicely, something he continues to do well.
— CB Ethan Bonner closed in rapidly on a blitz and could’ve gotten to the QB in time for a sack.
— As 11-on-11 was happening on one field, K Riley Patterson drilled a 60-yard field goal, working separately with just the holder and long snapper. Patterson, though, missed from 46 toward the end of practice when the team worked the two-minute drill. Zane Gonzalez made his.
