Driver arrested after alleged road rage incident leads to four-vehicle crash in Port St. Lucie
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. —
A 54-year-old man has been arrested after police say a road rage incident escalated into a four-vehicle crash that left multiple people injured Wednesday evening in Port St. Lucie.
According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, officers responded around 6:45 p.m. Aug. 5 to the intersection of South U.S. Highway 1 and Southeast Lyngate Drive/Southeast Tiffany Avenue following reports of a serious crash involving four vehicles.
Investigators said a red Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a black Ford Super Duty pickup truck were traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 1 while involved in an ongoing road rage confrontation. Police identified the pickup truck driver as Kevin Lonergan, 54.
Witness statements and dash-camera footage reviewed by investigators showed the motorcycle entered the intersection against a red light and collided with a black Chevrolet Silverado, ejecting the rider from the motorcycle. Police said Lonergan then drove the Ford pickup through the same red light, striking the motorcycle rider before crashing head-on into a blue Toyota RAV4.
The 31-year-old motorcycle rider and two people inside the Toyota RAV4 were taken to Lawnwood Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was transported to St. Lucie Medical Center. Authorities said the motorcycle rider suffered serious injuries, including a brain bleed and facial fractures, and lost consciousness after the crash. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Following the investigation, Lonergan was arrested on two counts of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and one count of reckless driving causing injury. After being medically cleared, he was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail.
The intersection remained closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene. All lanes reopened at approximately 2 a.m. Thursday, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation.
