BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — Boca Raton Police have identified the woman found dead in the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday morning as 63-year-old Patricia Brennan of Fort Lauderdale — a convicted murderer who was previously accused of fatally stabbing her own mother in a brutal 2014 case.

Police say a boater reported seeing a body in the water just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, approximately two miles east of 2500 N. Ocean Blvd.

The Boca Raton Police Department’s Dive Team recovered Brennan’s body from the ocean. Boca Raton Fire Rescue, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted with the response.

Brennan was previously convicted in the death of her 76-year-old mother, who died after prosecutors say Brennan stabbed her multiple times with a butcher knife and held her against her will inside their Hollywood home.

According to court testimony from the case, officers responded to a home in the 1800 block of N. 38th Avenue on May 18, 2014, and found Brennan’s mother outside at a neighbor’s home wearing a blood-stained nightgown with stab wounds to her abdomen. Investigators say she told officers she had been attacked by her daughter the night before and escaped after Brennan fell asleep.

The woman was hospitalized and later died at Hospice by the Sea, according to testimony presented in court.

It remains unclear how Brennan ended up in the water or what led to her death.
