Feeding Tampa Bay operates a mobile grocery store. It delivers fresh produce to areas where people can’t easily get food. Prices run from 20 cents to 60 cents through the “Groceries on the Go” program.
The mobile truck visits places like JL Young Garden Apartments, a housing community for people 50 and older who need affordable rent. Customers write down what they want. Personal shoppers climb into the vehicle and collect those items. Then workers carry bags of groceries out to customers who wait.
“I am in love with Feeding Tampa Bay,” said Queen Beverly, a resident who uses the service. “The prices are amazing, but the customer service is off the charts.”
Food deserts and food swamps get served across the region. Payment works through several methods, including SNAP and EBT benefits.
Ana Camargo directs health programs for the nonprofit. She explained why prices differ from regular stores.
“At a conventional store, you might see this jar of paprika for $4, but we’re able to offer it here for 60 cents,” said Camargo, according to Tampa Bay 28.
This initiative fits into a new fundraising effort. “Pack the Pantries” involves Tampa Bay 28, the food bank, and Achieva Credit Union working together.
Queen Beverly chose cabbage, sweet potatoes, and lemons during her recent visit. Each item cost between 20 and 40 cents.
