TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – With the primary election just days away, the direction of Tallahassee’s City Commission could be decided.
Three women are on the ballot for City Commission Seat 5, including Tifany Hill, Dianne Williams-Cox, and Dot Inman-Johnson.
Two of those names may sound familiar.
Former Tallahassee Mayor Dot Inman-Johnson is running, even though she told us in January that she did not plan to run for public office again.
“What changed my mind was the need to give Diane Williams-Cox a real challenge as a former city commissioner and former mayor of this city,” Inman-Johnson said.
Incumbent Dianne Williams-Cox is also up for re-election.
She first ran for Seat 5 in 2018 and won, and has held the seat ever since. She says since taking office, she believes she’s made the best decisions she could for the people of Tallahassee and hopes to continue that work.
“I don’t defend my record; my record is my record. I took the information that was available at the time, I did my own research, and I made decisions based on information that I was able to come to, not for Tallahassee right now but for Tallahassee for the future,” Williams-Cox said.
Tifany Hill is new to the ballot.
She tells us she’s a retired Army combat medic and war veteran.
According to her website, she decided to run after the sale of the Capital City Country Club, where enslaved graves were discovered.
She says that could translate into broader city policy.
“We need to really develop a policy like if there are bodies, we need to follow whatever the state law is to make sure that the processes are done correctly. We also need to include the citizens of Tallahassee in that process,” Hill said.
Two of the three candidates say affordability is their biggest concern for the city over the next four years.
For Inman-Johnson, it comes down to keeping promises.
“For good government, good financial stewardship, good smart growth, and protecting the values that all of the citizens in this community agree on,” Inman-Johnson said.
Williams-Cox and Hill say affordable housing is an area they want to focus on, creating better plans and solutions for residents.
“Affordable housing is the area that I really want to tackle. ” I see that we really will have to do a deep dive into what exactly is affordable housing, and so for me I would like to get with the Tallahassee Housing Authority, just have a comprehensive team.”, Hill said.
Williams-Cox says she wants to find creative ways to help residents afford to live in Tallahassee.
“I’m best suited for is to help us find solutions, find creative ways to allow residents to be able to afford to live in Tallahassee and to allow businesses to move in so they can create jobs so residents will have work,” Williams-Cox said.
The primary election is Tuesday, August 18.
