MARTIN COUNTY, Fla, (CBS12) — CBS12 News is continuing our coverage for back-to-school week.
Students within the Martin County School District are building more than classroom projects — they’re building skills that lead to their future careers.
Martin County schools offer about 30 Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. It gives students the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications before graduating.
Inside the shop at South Fork High School in Stuart, students in the building construction CTE program work with hand and power tools, learn framing, drywall, concrete, and basic electrical work. They build projects like doghouses, cornhole boards, and charcuterie boards.
Teacher Stanley Blount Jr. Says safety is the foundation of everything they do.
Students can also earn industry credentials, including Osha 10 and home builders institute certifications. And for the first time this year, they’ll have the chance to complete forklift training.
“You’re getting them early. You’re getting the hands-on experience. You’re getting the knowledge from industry professionals to where, if you choose not to go to college but into the industry, you’re already halfway there. You’re prepared,” said Blount Jr.
Blount says the program is open to all South Fork High School students.
Whether they plan to enter the trades or just want practical, everyday skills, CTE programs like this are available at most Martin County high schools.
