As the end of summer approaches, numerous charities are helping families in need prepare for the new school year by providing school supplies and backpacks for their children.
At the end of July, 4KIDS, a faith-based ministry serving children in foster care, participated in an outreach event at Christ Fellowship. Many other churches, service organizations and nonprofit charities have been conducting similar back-to-school drives throughout South Florida.
Speaking of service, South Florida’s women’s clubs have experienced a busier-than-usual summer. The Coral Gables Woman’s Club has found Birdie Bistro to be the perfect location for several mini-fundraisers, including its monthly Gringo Bingo and a popular new event where guests learn and play Mahjong.
Fundraising co-chairs Carmen Suarez and Rita Tennyson are to be commended for developing creative ways to support the club’s free Children’s Dental Clinic and its other charitable efforts. The two events were took place July 14 and 15 and will return with Gringo Bingo on Aug. 11 and Mahjong on Aug. 12.

The Coral Gables club’s sister organization, the Doral West Dade Woman’s Club, will donate a portion of the proceeds from its upcoming Aug. 22 luxury party-bus trip and VIP after-hours event at South Florida PBS headquarters in Boynton Beach. The Coconut Grove Negro Woman’s Club held its “Signature Brunch” on July 25 at the Coconut Grove Woman’s Club, with proceeds supporting scholarships and other community outreach efforts.
The Coconut Grove Woman’s Club also hosts bingo nights and numerous other activities that have helped its membership grow to nearly 200. Kudos to club president Iline Davila and her members on reaching that impressive milestone.
