MARTIN COUNTY, Fla, (CBS12) — CBS12 News is continuing our coverage for back-to-school week.
The Martin County School District is starting the new year on an academic high. The district earned an “A” rating for the second year in a row, while students also achieved the district’s highest state assessment scores on record.
Martin County is now celebrating back-to-back ‘A’ ratings after spending seven years as a “B”-rated district. Superintendent Michael Maine credits the students, teachers, families and staff — but says the work isn’t over.
Every district-operated school earned at least a “C” ratingStuart Middle, Indiantown Middle, and South Fork High all moved from a “B” to an “A” ratingHobe Sound Elementary improved from a “C” to a “B”
Students also posted strong gains on state assessments:
English language arts proficiency rose from 55% to 59%Math improved from 60% to 63%Geometry jumped nine points to 69%, ranking fourth in the stateThe district also finished eighth statewide in civics
“I’m extremely happy and proud of our teachers and all of the hard work that they do in the classroom every day. Our school administrators just continue to push themselves. We are not going to just settle. Our students deserve the very best, and in order to make sure they’re getting the very best, we have to keep pushing at an exceptional level,” said Superintendent Maine.
To keep that momentum going, Maine says the district is focusing extra support on its five “C”-rated schools this year.
