A home owned by Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra in Coral Gables, Fla., sustained major damage after a fire early Thursday morning. The home was unoccupied when the fire broke out, and there were no reported injuries, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed.

The fire was reported at 4:36 a.m. at a home on Southwest 80th Street. More than 20 rescue units responded to the reports, and crews arrived to find two structures on the property engulfed in flames. It was later upgraded to a second-alarm fire, which has since been extinguished, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the department said.

The Heat played in Denver on Wednesday night, and the team plane didn’t land in Miami until 5:11 a.m. ET, according to The Associated Press. Spoelstra headed to the home soon after returning to Miami, the AP reported. There was smoke visible coming from the property around 8 a.m., but the fire had been largely contained by then, according to multiple reports.

In a video posted by Florida TV station WPLG Local 10, a man the station identified as Spoelstra is shown outside the home watching the fire with his hands on his head. The clip begins at 1:33.

Miami-Dade Fire battalion chief Victoria Byrd told reporters on the scene that the flames were extinguished before the fire spread to other homes.

“We found fire that was as tall as the trees,” Byrd said about the flames. “Our units came in, did an excellent job. We used multiple aerial apparatuses, fire engines and rescues to help combat this incident. … The men and women from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were able to extinguish this fire and do the best job that they could.”

Spoelstra bought the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home in December 2023, according to the AP.
