A Hialeah man is facing charges in connection with a series of thefts of diesel fuel worth thousands of dollars from a 7-Eleven, police said.
Jose Dayron Bravo, 36, was arrested Wednesday on charges of fraudulently obtaining fuel, illegally transporting fuel and petit theft, an arrest report said.
According to the report, a 7-Eleven corporate investigator contacted police after they noticed diesel fuel inventory was decreasing without corresponding payments at the store at 7675 W. 4th Avenue.
Surveillance footage showed a black pickup truck would repeatedly enter the gas station, park at the diesel fuel pumps and remain for an extended period before leaving without paying, the report said.
On one day, July 28, the truck was at the pumps for around 25 minutes and during that time, around 99 gallons of fuel worth over $544 were dispensed with no payment made, the report said.
Investigators identified nine separate occasions between June 2 and Aug. 4 involving the truck in which about 753 gallons of diesel worth nearly $4,000 were dispensed without payment.
The truck was identified and Bravo was one of the registered owners, and he was identified as the man in the surveillance footage, the report said.
Bravo was taken into custody during a traffic stop and spontaneously said “if it was because of the diesel,” the report said.
Investigators searched his truck and found a large metal fuel tank mounted in the bed and equipped with pumps, along with an electrical switch to transfer fuel from the truck’s tank to the mounted tank, which was estimated to hold around 150 gallons of fuel, the report said.
They also found a magnet in the truck consistent with a device used to activate or manipulate fuel pumps without submitting payment.
Hialeah Police spokesman Eddie Rodriguez said Bravo is no stranger to fuel theft arrests.
“We know that there are other agencies that are also interested in talking to him to see if maybe he’s the person responsible for the same type of thefts that are occurring over there,” Rodriguez said. “This isn’t the first time he’s been arrested for the same thing, he has been arrested up north for the same exact thing, this isn’t the first time, but now he was caught here in the city of Hialeah doing this.”
