TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Three days after the western part of Colombia was hit by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, a Florida State University doctoral student is headed to Colombia to help her family.
Inge Guerrero said her cousins lost their home in the earthquake. Others are now out of work due to the damage and everyone needs basic supplies.
Guerrero said she was traveling when the earthquake struck and only found out when she finally answered her husband’s call.
“When I answered, he just told me like, there was an earthquake in Colombia and we can’t get a hold of your family. And it just was so scary. Like, I felt so sick to my stomach just to think like that I couldn’t get a hold of them, thinking like, are they okay?” Guerrero said.
She said it wasn’t until Wednesday night before she got a hold of her family.
She is heading down to Miami and then to Colombia, where she’ll survey the situation and distribute some supplies.
She’s organized a fundraising page which has raised several thousand dollars. She said she’s also working with a group in Miami to funnel medical supplies to a doctor friend in the country.
Other charities on the ground in the country include UNICEF and the Florida-based Global Empowerment Mission.
