We are celebrating a significant victory for two cats who were brutally killed in Florida after the man responsible was convicted and sentenced to the maximum 20 years in prison.
When Robert James Luther III was arrested for this brutal crime in March 2025, we could not have imagined just how strong the outcome would be. More than a year later, a jury found him guilty and a judge sentenced him to the maximum 20 years in prison.
Robert James Luther III was convicted following a three-day jury trial in May of 2026 on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated stalking. On July 27, 2026, Judge Nicholas R. Thompson sentenced Luther to four consecutive five-year prison terms, with credit for 500 days already served. He was also ordered to have no contact with animals and to provide a DNA sample.
In Defense of Animals launched a petition after Luther was accused of killing two cats and leaving their severed heads in a cardboard box on a Bonita Springs couple’s mailbox in March 2025. A man and his wife had reportedly been threatened by Luther for more than a year.
Investigators later recovered video from Luther’s phone showing him shooting two cats in the woods the day before their heads were discovered. The cats shown in the video matched the victims whose heads were found in the box.
More than 13,400 In Defense of Animals supporters signed our petition supporting Luther’s prosecution and incarceration. The petition was delivered to State Attorney Amira Fox’s office for presentation to the presiding judge ahead of sentencing.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who signed and shared our petition. Together, we made it clear that intentional violence against animals must be treated as a serious crime and that compassionate people were watching this case.

Luther will serve 10 years for the animal cruelty convictions alone. His maximum sentence holds him accountable for the horrific violence inflicted on these cats and sends a strong message that extreme animal cruelty has serious consequences.
