DAVIE (August 15, 2026) — Despite displaying relentless grit, a high-octane intensity that was missing most of last season, and flashes of elite potential, Fort Lauderdale United FC suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Sporting JAX in their 2026 Fall Gainbridge Super League opener at the newly renamed Amerant Bank Field.
A deflected strike off a Sporting JAX free kick as regulation time expired proved to be the lone, deciding blow, denying the home side a hard-earned result to kick off the campaign.
From the opening whistle, Fort Lauderdale’s revamped squad signaled its attacking intent. Attackers Emily Thompson and Kiara Locklear set an aggressive tone early, pressing high and stretching the Sporting JAX defense. Working in tandem with Grace Cutler, the front line generated the match’s best early opportunities. In the 35th minute, new addition Kelsey Oyler sparked a fluid sequence down the wing, finding Locklear, who laid a weighted pass to Cutler for a driving shot that was turned away. Fort Lauderdale nearly snatched the lead in first-half stoppage time when Locklear beat her defender down the left flank and picked out Sh’nia Gordon, whose one-touch effort narrowly missed the target to keep things scoreless at the break.
The second-half momentum remained firmly with the hosts. Shortly after the restart, Thompson whipped a dangerous free kick into the box, where Simpson rose high to unleash a volley that crashed off the back post. Head Coach Tyrone Mears, making his return to the sidelines, adjusted his tactical approach shortly after by introducing All-League Second Team midfielder Kelli Van Treeck. Gordon continued her relentless evening, sparking a dominant stretch with three sharp runs down the right wing and a dangerous shot on frame.
Mears injected fresh energy in the 78th minute via a triple substitution, bringing on Taylor Smith, Abi Hugh, and Farrah Walters. However, soccer can be a cruel game. Immediately after conceding a free kick outside the box in the 90th minute, Fort Lauderdale watched helplessly as a deflected JAX shot slipped past the line.
Fort Lauderdale pressed furiously across five minutes of stoppage time, but an equalizer remained elusive. Now 0-1-0, the club takes a week off before returning to Amerant Bank Field on Friday, August 28, hosting Brooklyn FC to close out their opening homestand and hunt for their first three points of the season.
