Tampa man killed after tractor-trailer crashes into trees along SR-91 in Sumter County

A 40-year-old Tampa man was killed after the tractor-trailer he was driving crashed off Florida’s Turnpike on Sunday evening.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday near milepost 306.5 on southbound SR-91.

Troopers said the driver lost control of the tractor-trailer, went off the road, and hit a guardrail before crashing into several trees.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash involved hazardous material, which crews spend nearly 12 hours working to clear overnight.

The southbound lanes of SR-91 reopened around 5:30 a.m. Monday.
