A man has been arrested on dozens of charges in connection with the theft of airbags from Honda vehicles in Hialeah and throughout Miami-Dade, records showed.
Rayeem Shane Lawrence, 19, was arrested Sunday and faces 41 counts of grand theft, 41 counts of burglary conspiracy, 41 counts of criminal solicitation, as well as burglary, grand theft conspiracy, and criminal mischief charges, Miami-Dade jail records showed.
According to arrest reports, in the early morning hours of June 5, multiple Honda vehicles were targeted at two apartment complexes in Hialeah in which the driver side airbags were removed.
Surveillance video showed multiple suspects participating in the burglaries.
Investigators were able to determine Lawrence was at the complexes around the time the burglaries occurred, the reports said.
The reports said Lawrence was arrested by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office on July 3 in a separate case, after it was determined he was associated with multiple Honda burglaries and airbag thefts in Miami-Dade.
During Lawrence’s appearance before a judge on Monday, it was mentioned he was already out on bond in a burglary case.
“Forty-two windows damaged, 41 airbags stolen,” a prosecutor said during the hearing.
“Estimated loss $102,500,” Judge Maria Espinosa Dennis said.
Lawrence’s public defender asked for his release on house arrest but Dennis set his bond at over $111,000.
“It’s tantamount to no bond,” the public defender said.
“He’s got six cases,” Dennis said. “I guess the answer to your question is respectfully no. If this were the only case we’d be having another conversation.”
