A Miami man is jailed after allegedly keeping a car with the owner’s dead body in it for a day and a half, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
A man is locked up after having a car with a dead body in the back seat in his possession for a day and a half as he tried to decide what to do, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
On May 27, around 11 a.m., the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the Northside Shopping Plaza at 7900 NW 27th Ave, after reports of a car in the parking lot with flies surrounding it and a foul odor coming it.
Deputies found a locked 2026 Kia K4 sedan and saw two rubber mats on top of what appeared to be human remains, according to the arrest affidavit of Darrell Anderson, 39.
A window of the car was broken and the body of Jean Paul Larice, 36 ,was found. Deputies say his body was in “an advanced stage of decomposition,” according to the arrest affidavit. The car was registered to Larice, investigators say.
An investigation revealed that on May 23, Anderson was in Larice’s car that was being driven by another unidentified man. Anderson told police that Larice was “unconscious and slumped in the back seat of his own vehicle,” the arrest affidavit reads.
Anderson and the other man went to several liquor stores with Larice in the car, deputies say. In the early morning hours of May 24, Anderson realized Larice was dead, he told investigators.
The other man eventually got out of the car and left it, and Larice with Anderson.
“The defendant advised that he had possession of the vehicle for approximately one and a half days with the victim deceased in the backseat and was trying to decide what to do with the vehicle and the body,” detectives wrote in his arrest affidavit.
Anderson then pawned Larice’s phone at a Walmart located at 3200 NW 79th Street via a kiosk owned by ecoATM.
Investigators obtained the cellular phone and related records from ecoATM. The records revealed that Anderson provided false information to pawn the phone. Anderson wrote that the phone “was a gift on 5/2015 from a friend named Raymond in Homestead, FL,” according to the arrest affidavit.
Video surveillance footage obtained from the Northside Shopping Plaza showed Anderson exiting the driver’s side of Larice’s car. Anderson took off without rendering aid to Larice or notifying emergency services.
Larice’s body was concealed by yoga mats that had been placed over him, deputies say.
On Monday, personnel from the Homicide Street Violence Task Force found Anderson and took him into custody. He is charged with failure to report a death with intent to conceal, grand theft vehicle, dealing in stolen property and giving false verification of ownership or using an altered ID to sell or pawn items.
He appeared in bond court on Tuesday where Circuit Court Judge Mindy Glazer set his bond to $12,500. He remains jailed at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Tuesday.
