South Florida is facing a brutally hot Tuesday, with temperatures climbing close to record levels, along with high humidity making conditions feel even more oppressive.

Miami is forecast to reach 98 degrees, which would break the daily record of 96 set back in 2022 and would also make Tuesday the hottest day of the year so far. Miami’s all-time record high is 100 degrees, set in 1942.

Fort Lauderdale is forecast to reach 97 degrees, just shy of Aug. 18’s daily record of 98 set in 1924 and matching its hottest temperature of the year so far.

Like Miami, Fort Lauderdale’s all time high temperature is 100 degrees. This occurred multiple times, most recently in 2009. Key West is forecast to reach 92 degrees, below Tuesday’s record of 95 and just below the hottest value recorded this year.

One of the big reasons for the exceptional heat on Tuesday is a west wind. Westerly winds have a long fetch over the Florida peninsula before reaching the east coast, allowing the air to heat significantly over land. This is typically our hottest wind direction because it limits the cooling influence of the Atlantic sea breeze.

Unfortunately, the humidity doesn’t care about wind direction and isn’t going anywhere.

The combination of temperatures well into the 90s and high humidity will push feels like numbers as high as 112. A heat advisory is in effect, and prolonged exposure to these conditions can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

If you have to spend time outdoors, drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, and try to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and keep an eye on anyone particularly vulnerable to the heat, including older adults, young children and those working or exercising outdoors.

Look for another really hot day on Wednesday followed by late afternoon thunderstorms. With a few more storms in the forecast later week and weekend, we may carve a few degrees off of our highs. While we are still forecast above average temperatures, records look to be just out of reach.
