TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Community members eager for a local Buc-ee’s development can celebrate as Tallahassee is one step closer.
During a review meeting Wednesday, Leon County officials recommended that the Buc-ee’s project move forward to the Development Review Committee (DRC) for final approval.
That review process ensures the site plans meet requirements for traffic, stormwater, wetlands, buffers, landscaping, signage and lighting standards, according to an update from Leon County Commissioner Brian Welch.
The travel center is planned to have 131 acres permanently preserved for conservation, over 1,000 trees along with shrubs, dark lighting and more than a thousand feet of new turn lanes and traffic signal at Capital Circle Northwest. It is expected to be located off of I-10 at exit 196.
County officials said the project has more than 2,000 feet of separation from the Riverwood Acres residential subdivision.
Residents still had some concerns over traffic and land protection. Alexander Mack, a resident in Tallahassee since 1997, said folks are excited for the project but worried about the traffic.
“She’s looking forward to the actual facility being there, but she’s concerned; we’re concerned about the traffic. And so hopefully they will widen the roads and put some traffic signals there to help out,” Mack said.
The Tallahassee resident also stated that the roads are sometimes already pretty busy.
“It’s not the best, especially out, especially about 7:30 in the morning and about 4-5:30. It’s already kinda rough. So the road needs to be widened.”
The DRC is expected to confirm whether the construction plans and required permits meet the county’s standards.
A final review is expected during a public DRC meeting before the end of the year, and if approved, the county will conduct inspections during construction, according to the county.
The county does not vote in this process.
