POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A 53-year-old man confessed to shooting a man who was working as a clerk on Thursday night at a gas station in Pompano Beach, according to a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy’s arrest report.
Shortly after 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, deputies found a man who was wounded in the abdomen behind a counter at the Marathon gas station at 220 South Dixie Highway, according to the report.
Zalim Bacchus, who had a .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol, “had his hands raised and sponaenously uttered, ‘I shot him,’” a deputy wrote, according to the arrest report.
The victim told deputies that after Bacchus used the restroom, he was “concealing a bottle of Sprite,” so he locked him inside the store and confronted him, according to the arrest report.
“Bacchus pulled a gun on him and fired at him,” a deputy wrote, according to the report.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel took the victim to Broward Health North in Pompano Beach, and his condition was critical but stable, according to the report.
Broward corrections booked Bacchus on Friday morning at the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale, according to county inmate records.
Bacchus, of Pompano Beach, faced a charge of aggravated battery, a first-degree felony, and Broward County Circuit Judge Michael Lynch was set to preside over the capital case, according to county court records.
