ST. CLOUD, Fla. — St. Cloud customers set a new electricity demand record as extreme heat continues across Central Florida, according to the Orlando Utilities Commission.
OUC said demand reached 303 megawatts Sunday, surpassing the previous record of 298 megawatts set July 8.
Temperatures have climbed into the upper 90s in recent days, with heat index values exceeding 110 degrees. The conditions are placing additional strain on air-conditioning systems and increasing electricity use, the utility said.
OUC recommends setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher and using the “auto” fan setting. The utility said every degree below 78 can increase cooling costs by 6% to 8%.

Replacing dirty air-conditioning filtersUsing ceiling fans and turning them off when leaving a roomClosing blinds, shades and curtains, especially on east- and west-facing windowsRunning full loads in dishwashers and washing machinesSetting water heaters between 120 and 125 degreesAir-drying clothes when possible
