Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration on Sunday were examining the wreckage of a small plane that crashed in the ocean off Boca Raton a day earlier.
The wreckage of the Piper 30A was hoisted from the water on Sunday morning. The crash happened about 10:25 a.m. Saturday in the ocean off 250 S. Ocean Boulevard after the pilot notified authorities of mechanical issues, Boca Raton police said.
The plane was trying to land at Boca Raton Airport when it came down in the water, police said.
Boca Raton Ocean Rescue responded to the crash site and assisted the pilot out of the water. The pilot was the only person on board and was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
Authorities said the plane took off from Page Field in Fort Myers and was headed to Bimini Airport in the Bahamas. The pilot was identified as a 23-year-old woman who climbed out of the plane uninjured, according to Gulf Coast News. She told Gulf Coast News she has been piloting for four years.
FAA investigators on Sunday were working to disassemble the plane at the Silver Palm Boat Ramp, 600 East Palmetto Park Road, as part of evidence gathering.
