Division-leading Rays continue road trip in series opener against the slumping Tigers
Despite having lost seven of their last 10 games, the Tampa Bay Rays hold a three-game lead in the American League East Division standings as they head into Monday night’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers. On their third losing streak of three or more games since the All-Star Break, the Detroit Tigers have dropped eight of their last nine, including five in a row as they send veteran left-hander Framber Valdez (8-8, 4.35 ERA) to the mound in search of his fourth win of August. The Rays will counter with right-handed All-Star Drew Rasmussen (13-5, 3.01 ERA), who has won six consecutive starts, allowing two runs or less in five of those six outings.

McGonigle, who turned 22 earlier this month, was the first Tiger rookie since Mark Fidrych in 1976, to be named to the All-Star team.
