Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks

Head coach Liam Coen again declined to start Trevor Lawrence in a preseason game, with the veteran sitting out against the Carolina Panthers and Nick Mullens starting. Lawrence may not have played, but he was dealing in joint practices, making several impressive plays in the red zone and looking very comfortable. Coen showed strong support for Mullens with a few quotes. Mullens started against Carolina, playing the first quarter and leading Jacksonville to a field goal. He did nothing in the game to lose his grip on the backup job, but the quarterbacks behind him continue to show fight — particularly rookie Joey Aguilar, who went 9-for-10 for 130 yards and a touchdown in relief of Mullens and Carter Bradley and looked very good in the process.

Preseason Updates: Running Backs

The starters continue to operate in a committee, with Bhayshul Tuten and Chris Rodriguez Jr. more or less splitting touches as training camp rolls along. Tuten is embracing the de facto lead role he has assumed since former Jaguar Travis Etienne Jr. departed to New Orleans, and he and the other backs say they are ready to step up to the larger workload. Second-year back LeQuint Allen Jr. was expected to factor into this committee as the primary pass-catching option, but he suffered a soft-tissue injury last week and will miss the remainder of camp, forfeiting valuable practice reps. Behind the three-headed backfield, veteran Ameer Abdullah made the most of limited opportunities against Carolina, taking six carries for 45 yards and hauling in three receptions for 37 yards, making a strong case for the fourth roster spot despite still appearing to trail DeeJay Dallas on the depth chart. J’Mari Taylor has had a solid camp but projects as a practice squad candidate.
